These platforms are a key component of the eCommerce framework, providing an opportunity for both large and small businesses looking to either venture into or strengthen their presence in the world of online sales. Surely, you already know the vast majority of the platforms mentioned, if not all. But it never hurts to review the lesson and delve a little deeper into it. So, let us get to know better the 10 most visited marketplaces.
But, first of all, we must highlight that some marketplaces appear more than once in the ranking. This is because, although it is the same company, the visited pages are different. For example, “amazon.de” corresponds to Amazon’s domain in Germany, while “amazon.in” is for India. Now, let us proceed!
Far ahead at the top, Amazon’s .com domain continues to maintain its status as the most visited marketplace in the world. In March alone, the site had approximately 3.455.000 billion visits, compared to 2.420.000 in April 2024 (+42.77%).
Currently, it is one of the most powerful tech giants in the world, but the origins of this marketplace, named after the world’s longest river, date back to 1994. It was that year when the well-known Jeff Bezos founded Amazon as a small online bookstore, which eventually became the platform we know today, where we can find virtually any product we can think of.
Currently, Amazon operates in much of the world, selling its products in multiple countries in Africa, America, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. However, the giant tech’s reach has not yet extended to countries like North Korea, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Syria, North Sudan, and South Sudan. Additionally, since 2022, it has stopped selling products to Russia and Belarus due to the armed conflict with Ukraine.
Despite this, Amazon’s influence and power are increasing every day, which is reflected in its 2024 results, a year in which its net sales reached $701.800 billion (approximately €613.800 billion), an 11% increase from the previous year.
Temu debuted at the 6th position on the list in 2024. In 2021, eBay became a pioneer by being the first major marketplace to sell NFT.
