Just a few days ago, Perplexity launched its new Perplexity Max subscription, a premium plan priced at €182/month, among whose advantages it was highlighted that its subscribers would be the first to try Comet, its own web browser powered by AI. This powerful incentive has just become a reality.

Comet is now available on Mac and Windows for those subscribed to Perplexity Max. Furthermore, Perplexity has announced that, over the coming weeks, it will also be activated by invitation for selected users who registered on a waitlist.

Adaptive and Intelligent Browsing

The company’s goal is to redefine online search and foster curiosity, helping people connect ideas and become more efficient. To achieve this, Comet utilizes the Perplexity search engine, combining web accessibility with the company’s AI capabilities.

Comet transforms every browsing session into a personalized and intelligent experience. Start a project, pursue a new idea, or revisit an old one; Comet adapts in real time, showing you what you need even before you realize it.

With privacy as its foundation and usability as its promise, Comet is designed to make every interaction more seamless, intelligent, and personalized, adapting to your way of thinking and working. The more you use it, the more indispensable it will become,” Perplexity explains.

How Comet Works

The main interface of this tool is similar to other AI chatbots, presenting a clean design where a search bar stands out at the center. The user can enter their query or request, and Comet will access the web to perform the task accurately.

Comet brings Perplexity to you on every website you visit. Instantly understand anything you see, in any language and from any perspective. Ask the assistant to summarize, shop, code, or send,” the company states.

In the upper left corner of the screen, you will find “Comet Assistant”, an AI agent capable of understanding the content of the page you are visiting and designed to provide support and automate tasks. Some examples of use shared by Perplexity include: drafting emails, sending meeting invitations, managing tabs, or mapping routes on Google Maps.

A Rematch Against Google

Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity, has expressed great enthusiasm over the launch, highlighting the possibilities that Comet offers. During this display of excitement, he also took the opportunity to send a dig at Google.

Some time ago, I reached out to Chrome to offer Perplexity as a default search engine. They refused. This is why we decided to build the Comet browser,” he revealed on his Twitter account.

Now, Perplexity’s goal is to challenge the king of browsers and persuade users to leave Chrome behind, switching to the conversational and assisted experience that Comet offers. It is an ambitious dream, considering how well-established Google’s browser is and the price point of Comet.

However, the current cost of Comet may cease to be a barrier in the future, as Srinivas has assured that restricting the browser to the Max plan is a temporary measure. Nevertheless, even when Comet is enabled for other Perplexity plans, its most advanced capabilities will remain exclusive to the higher-tier plans.
