One of the most popular AIs for generating images from text among users is Midjourney. However, it is not the only one, since there are several AIs that also allow you to create the most professional works. So today we want to present you a list (in alphabetical order) with some alternatives to Midjourney that can help you exploit even more the potential of the artificial intelligence world.

Midjourney is a tool capable of creating any illustration or artwork from a description written in English. When it was launched to the public it had a free trial version, but in March 2023 they eliminated this option and now it is completely paid, allowing you to choose between several subscription plans.

This AI does not have its own portal or app to install on the mobile, but works within Discord, so you must log in to your account and join the AI server. Once inside the server, you have to access one of the “Newcomer rooms” channels to start using it.

As demonstrated in the graph below, since last year Midjourney has been one of the most sought after image generating AIs by users, thanks to its ease of use and its ability to generate realistic quality images. There is a drop in search volume for Midjourney that coincides with the time when the free plan was removed, although searches for the other AIs also decline in that period.

In the case of DALL-E, its major upturn comes after the launch of its latest DALLE-3 model.

Alternative Imaging AIs to Midjourney

As we mentioned, this is not the only image-generating AI tool on the market. Let’s take a look at the main alternatives.

Craiyon

Formerly called Dalle-mini, it is an open source generator from OpenAI. Although it is a free tool, it is a bit slower and with a less sophisticated and less comprehensive system than other platforms on the market, so it works better with simple sentences.

Among its advantages is its ability to automatically generate up to 9 results. Although it understands different languages, for best results we recommend entering descriptions in English. To keep the computers active and finance the maintenance of the tool, advertisements are included on the website.

DALL-E

So far OpenAI, the artificial intelligence developer, has released three versions of DALL-E, the most recent being DALLE-3. This is available in ChatGPT’s paid plans, but there is a way to use it for free. All you have to do is access the Bing chatbot and ask it to generate an image, which it will be doing with the DALLE-3 AI.

DALLE-2 was launched in January 2022 and is currently available to all users with no waiting list. It works as a “neural system” that can analyze a text in depth, able to relate the subject, the action and the artistic style to offer multiple image options.

In addition to this, with DALLE-2 it is possible to edit an image to include new objects or elements to the composition and replace others, as well as to create new designs from existing ones. In order to use it, you need to create an OpenAI account.

Dreamstudio

This tool, created by Stability AI, is based on an open source generation model called Stable Diffusion and offers a wide range of parameters to adjust the result of the images to your needs, such as artistic style, number of generated images and “Prompt strenght“, a function that grades the level of similarity between the description and the final image.

While all users can access with an initial free trial, once the free images are exhausted a minimum recharge of £10 must be made to continue using the tool. The images are generated under a license that allows both commercial and non-commercial use.

Firefly

This image-generating AI was developed by Adobe and after launching a beta phase, in which it was necessary to register on a waiting list, it has now become free and freely available to all users with an Adobe ID profile. In addition, Adobe has recently integrated Firefly into Adobe Express, so it is available in Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.

It has been trained with open license data and Adobe Stock, the company’s own royalty-free image bank, so using it avoids problems related to this aspect.

Unlike other models, Firefly can not only generate images from text, but can use a sketch created by the user or take an already created image and add objects. In addition to this, you can select the style, color, lighting and composition of the image with different options.

Hotpot (AI Art Maker)

The AI Art Maker image generator tool works similarly to the ones described above: you enter a descriptive text and the program processes it to create an image, adjusting the criteria, such as painting style, size, whether you want different results and so on.

Its disadvantage is that it is a bit slower. It can take between 20 seconds or 2 minutes to complete the creation, although in cases of high traffic on the web, free creations can take between 2 and 3 hours. To increase the speed it is necessary to buy credits, which will also allow you to make commercial use of the images you generate. You can choose between one-time, monthly or annual payment plans.

LimeWire – BlueWillow

Previously, BlueWilloow worked in a very similar way to Midjourney, being necessary to register in Discord and join its server. Now, this AI has been acquired by LimeWire and works from LimeWireAI Studio, a platform of this company to which you will be redirected from the BlueWillow website.

In order to use it you must register and access this platform, where, in addition, the premium plan includes the possibility of using the AI models of other systems such as DALL-E or Stable Diffusion XL. The free trial plan is limited to about 10 credits.

For more precise images, you can include in the instructions details of the scenery (day or night, weather, elements), materials, colors and artistic styles. In addition, you can also enter a negative prompt, determine the dimensions of the work, the number of images generated, etc.

Nightcafe

Angus Russell developed Nightcafe in November 2019 in Sydney and it is a tool with which you can not only create images from a description, but you can print them and show them off in your living room. You also have the option to share your works with other users of this AI.

To start using it, the platform offers 5 free credits and each image generated will spend one credit.

Stable Diffusion Web

Our last tool on the list of alternatives to Midjourney is Stable Diffusion Web, which like Dreamstudio, is based on Stable Diffusion. It’s free and to access it you don’t have to register or create an account. Although it will not save the images you have generated or the texts you have entered, unless you create a profile on Hugging Face, which will allow you to save the creations or share them with the community.

The tool allows you to create an image in a minute or so, although its level of accuracy is below Dalle-2, Dreamstudio or Midjourney.
